Asthma Resources for Professionals

Asthma in West Yorkshire final.pngChildren’s Asthma in West Yorkshire infographic: this infographic provides some detail about the impact of asthma on the children and young people population across West Yorkshire, and some initiatives such as West Yorkshire Healthier Together asthma pages, and Asthma awareness training that are supporting colleagues across the system working hard to improve asthma care for children, young people and families.

The West Yorkshire Children and Young People's Asthma Network meet quarterly, working collaboratively to improve asthma outcomes across our West Yorkshire system. The work is currently focussed on delivering the National Bundle of Care for Children’s Asthma and the Health Inequalities: Core20Plus5 Framework. If you have an interest supporting this work or would like to find out more, please contact casey.russell1@nhs.net

Asthma training; Children and Young People workforce, volunteers, parents, and carers

asthma training flyer.pngAs part of the ongoing system work to improve asthma care for children and young people, we have co produced this West Yorkshire children, young people, and family’s workforce flyer with an Asthma Nurse Specialist from LTHT and the WY comms team. The tiered training is free and helps to improve asthma knowledge and awareness. The first level training, tier 1, is also appropriate for non healthcare staff and volunteers such as youth workers, school staff, children’s centre staff, housing teams etc and should be promoted as widely as possible across our networks to raise much needed awareness about asthma.

Asthma Pathway: Clinical assessment and management tool for children is a guidance document clinically developed in West Yorkshire for use in primary and community care settings. The tool offers a step by step guide to assessing a child for asthma, covering priorities of clinical assessment, history, examination, diagnosis (look out for) and actions for primary care based on assessment findings.

Children's asthma and housing

Children’s Asthma and Housing pathways are developing in West Yorkshire between the health and housing sectors. In 2023 to 2024, Leeds City Council’s Housing team and children’s asthma secondary care clinicians developed a new way of working, aiming to decrease the number of children with uncontrolled asthma in the city's 20% most deprived areas. Through the creation of clear pathways of communication between healthcare and housing, using a RAG referral model the teams have worked collaboratively developing ways to best support children and families. This was in response to a national NHS direction to reduce health inequalities experienced by children with asthma and new guidance on responding to concerns around damp and mould through Awaab’s Law. Alongside this work WY ICB colleagues are leading on the development of a shared set of principles between children’s healthcare and housing partners across the wider system. Local Place teams are also working innovatively with housing colleagues and other sectors to raise awareness around the impact of asthma on children and young people’s health.
